When you activate the plugin it creates a page listing all your galleries, ready to add to your menu.

It suits anyone who keeps a website up to date: clubs, schools, charities, venues, event organisers, small businesses, and the agencies who build their sites.

Adding photos

Photos, folders or zip files. Drag in individual photos, a whole folder or a zip file, with a progress bar for each upload.

The right way up. Phone photos that would otherwise appear sideways are rotated.

Resized for the web. Each photo is resized for different screen sizes, and saved as WebP when your server supports it, so phones download small images and large screens get sharp ones.

iPhone photos. HEIC photos are converted when your server supports it. If it doesn't, Lloyd Gallery says so instead of adding photos that won't display.

Clear error messages. If a file is too big or can't be used, you're told why, with the affected files listed. Uploads that can be tried again get a Retry button.

Photos you already have. Pick photos from your Media Library instead of uploading them again. On a site in one language, everything Lloyd Gallery shows can be translated into that language, including right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

With Polylang (version 3.7 or later), galleries can be translated into every language on your site. Each gallery gets a Language box: pick a language and Lloyd Gallery creates a draft copy for you to translate and publish. Visitors then see the gallery, the galleries page and the photo captions in their own language.

A few things to know:

A translation copies the gallery's list of photos when you create it. Photos you add to one language later aren't added to the others. Your image files are never copied.

A gallery not yet translated into a language is still listed on that language's galleries page, in its original language, until you translate it. To list only translated galleries instead, choose "Leave them out" under "Galleries not yet translated" in Lloyd Gallery → Settings.

Gallery addresses keep your galleries page's name, with Polylang's language prefix in front, for example /fr/gallery/my-gallery/.

To translate photo captions, turn on media translation in Polylang's settings. Without it, each caption is shared by every language.

WPML isn't supported yet.

Can I password-protect a gallery?

Yes, with the Lloyd Gallery Pro add-on. There's an optional setting, off unless you switch it on, in Lloyd Gallery → Settings to show a small "Photo gallery by Lloyd Gallery" link under your galleries.

What happens to my galleries if I delete the plugin?

They're kept. Deleting the plugin removes only its settings. Your galleries, the Photo Gallery page and your photos all stay, so if you reinstall, everything is where you left it.

1.3.0

Improved: one word for one thing. Everything is now called a gallery, and the page that lists them is the galleries page. Your galleries, photos and pages are updated automatically when you update the plugin.

Improved: Lloyd Gallery's settings are now under Lloyd Gallery → Settings, next to your galleries, and there's a Settings link on the Plugins screen. The old address still works.

Improved: a gallery's "event date" is now just "Date", with a note saying what it's for.

Improved: plainer, shorter wording on every screen.

Fixed: on phones and tablets, Pause in the lightbox slideshow didn't pause it.

Fixed: swiping, using the arrows or changing the speed stopped the slideshow. It now keeps playing until you press Pause or close the lightbox, and the next photo comes a full interval after you move on by hand.

If you use Lloyd Gallery Pro, update it to version 1.2: earlier versions don't work with this one, and Lloyd Gallery says so on the Plugins screen until it's updated.

If your site has its own CSS for the list of galleries: the class names now start lg-gallery-. Lloyd Gallery updates your site's Additional CSS for you; CSS in a theme's own files needs changing by hand.

1.2.0

New: works with Polylang. Translate your galleries into any number of languages from the new Language box on each gallery. Visitors see each gallery, its gallery page, captions and alt text in their own language.

New: a gallery that hasn't been translated yet is still listed on each language's gallery page, in its original language, so a gallery page you've already copied into another language keeps showing your galleries. A new setting lets you leave them out instead.

New: a caption that hasn't been translated yet is shown in its original language, and marked so screen readers read it correctly.

New: with Polylang, the galleries screen shows one card per gallery with its translations, and can list the galleries still missing a translation.

New: with Polylang, "Choose from Media Library" shows each photo once, with a language badge and a language filter.

Improved: every message with a number in it uses the right plural form in every language, and numbers use your site's own separators (1,234 or 1.234).

Improved: the admin screens, the gallery and the lightbox lay out correctly in right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew, and drag-and-drop follows the reading direction.

Improved: gallery names, descriptions and captions are shown in their own writing direction, so a caption in one language isn't cut off on a screen set to another.

Improved: gallery pages and the galleries screen load faster, especially for large galleries.

Improved: the plugin's name in your Plugins list now matches its WordPress.org listing.

1.1.4

Gallery photos now show on sites using Polylang with media translation switched on. Before, photos in another language, and every photo uploaded before Polylang was installed, were missing from gallery pages and the gallery screen.

Gallery dates now use your site's own date format from Settings > General, so they read naturally in any language. Before, they were always shown as day, month, year.

1.1.3

Your galleries, gallery list and lightbox now always show visitors resized copies of your photos, never the original files, so the location data phones store in photos isn't shared.

Every word in the lightbox, including its buttons and tooltips, can now be translated.

1.1.2

Gallery pages now have their own clean layout on block themes such as Twenty Twenty-Five: the gallery title, date, description and a full-width gallery. Previously they borrowed the theme's blog-post layout, which showed the cover photo very large and an empty "Written by" line. You can still customise the layout in the Site Editor.

Rewrote this plugin description and FAQ in plain English, and listed every feature.

The image quality setting now shows its real range (40 to 100).

1.1.1

Gallery addresses now always work straight after activation, and keep working when you rename or move the Photo Gallery page.

Uploading lots of photos at once no longer risks some of them going missing from the gallery. Existing galleries are updated automatically.

Gallery image settings now only affect gallery photos, not the rest of your Media Library.

Captions are no longer lost when adding photos from the Media Library.

Failed saves are now reported instead of looking successful, and can be retried.

Zip uploads are checked more carefully and tidied up afterwards.

Rotating a photo now removes the old, unrotated copies.

Sites using Lloyd Gallery Pro should update it to 1.0.6 first.

1.1.0

Every button, message and dialog in the dashboard can now be translated.

Removing several photos at once now uses the same confirmation box as everything else.

Clearer bulk action messages, such as "3 galleries updated".

Zip uploads handle very large or unreadable files more safely.

Installation instructions corrected.

1.0.12

The gallery list in the dashboard now only shows galleries you're allowed to edit.

Fixed photos occasionally going missing when several were uploaded at the same moment.

Fixed custom image sizes being lost the first time settings were saved.

Fixed the Preview link for draft galleries.

Dropping a folder of more than 100 photos now adds all of them.

Zips with more than 300 photos now tell you how many were left out.

Fixed rotating some older photos.

Deleting the plugin now removes its settings, while keeping your galleries and photos.

1.0.11

Search engine information on gallery pages is now written more safely.

1.0.10

Fixed the settings screen's styling.

1.0.9

The Lloyd Gallery Pro notice now behaves consistently whether or not the add-on is installed.

1.0.8

Minor code quality improvement.

1.0.7

Upload errors that share a reason are now grouped into one message instead of repeating for every file.

Errors that can't be fixed by retrying no longer show a Retry button.

1.0.6

Select and remove several photos at once, including a whole range with Shift.

Clearer messages when a file is too large for your website, shown before the upload starts.

1.0.5

The gallery screen now shows a live photo count.

The selection counter shows the total, such as "12 / 45 selected".

A "+ New Gallery" button now appears on the empty gallery list.

1.0.4

iPhone HEIC photos are now refused with a clear message on servers that can't display them, instead of appearing broken.

HEIC photos on servers that support them are now optimised like every other photo.

1.0.3

Tighter permission checks for publishing, deleting and uploading.

1.0.2

Behind-the-scenes improvements to avoid conflicts with other plugins.

Simplified the Privacy box on the gallery screen.

Moved the dashboard menu item to the standard position.

1.0.0

First stable release.

Photo galleries for WordPress.
